Art Therapy

Some things are too hard to talk about. Creating art is a natural form of expression for children — it awakens the imagination and helps a child share thoughts, ideas and feelings with you and others. Adults benefit too.

How we help

What art therapy can do

  • Give children a voice before they have the language skills to explain themselves
  • Provide a safe, non-verbal outlet for emotions left unsaid
  • Help children exposed to trauma — directly, like bullying, or indirectly, like witnessing conflict at home — process anxiety and sadness
  • Offer a calming activity for children with ADHD
  • Guide a child through a creative process to unpack stress and build coping mechanisms that work for them
  • Make healing enjoyable, which can accelerate both healing and growth

At different stages, children may not have the language skills to express themselves, but they still need an outlet for their voice. Kids have an innate ability to develop a strong imagination followed by unrestrained creativity. Art therapy taps into that imagination.

When children have been exposed to early trauma, whether directly, like bullying, or indirectly, like witnessing domestic violence, they can develop depression and anxiety — serious conditions that, left untreated, can be detrimental to a child’s overall health. Working with trained art-therapy clinicians gives children a creative space for non-verbal expression and an outlet for emotions left unsaid.

If your child is struggling with emotional or behavioral challenges, we can guide them through a creative process to unpack their stress and build positive coping mechanisms that are effective for them. Expression through art is a safe outlet for children to identify and understand their emotions. Providing a safe channel for difficult feelings through an enjoyable activity is fun for your child, and it can accelerate both healing and growth.

FAQ

Common questions

Does my child need to be “good at art”?
No. Art therapy is about expression, not artistic skill. The process of making — not the finished product — is what helps children identify and understand their emotions.
Is art therapy only for children?
Art therapy helps children and adults alike explore emotions through artistic expression. Several of our therapists integrate art and other expressive approaches into work with teens and young adults as well.
