Family Therapy

Family therapy helps you understand your own family system and your role within it. When you know where you stand, change becomes easier — and so do the conversations that have felt impossible.

What families work on together

The goal is not to decide who is right or wrong. It is to help family members understand one another and work together toward meaningful change.

  • Recognize patterns and behaviors that have been repeated over time
  • Understand how emotions drive actions — yours and your child’s
  • Communicate more productively and listen with intention
  • Set healthy boundaries, a part of relationships many families struggle with
  • Build problem-solving skills that work for your family
  • Navigate co-parenting, divorce, a move, a loss or another transition
  • Recognize your family’s strengths and enjoy time together again

“A dysfunctional family is any family with more than one person in it.” — Mary Karr

Family therapy can help you better understand your own family system and your role within it. Having a good sense of that role helps you see how patterns and behaviors may have been recreated within your family over time — why you respond the way you do, and how your actions are shaped by your emotions. You can come to understand how your reactions make sense given your family background, your relationships and your interactions with others. That understanding guides the changes you are seeking within your family and in other significant relationships.

Parenting, co-parenting and the pressure of adolescence

Parenting can be a taxing experience, particularly for new parents or for those learning to navigate the open waters of co-parenting. In family therapy, individuals learn problem-solving skills grounded in better communication and healthy boundaries.

Family therapy can involve families of school-aged children, teenagers or adult family members coping with transition. When adolescent issues arise, parents may find themselves at the end of their rope. Investing time in family therapy can relieve that pressure and gently redirect household dynamics. Because we are a practice full of child and adolescent specialists, we are uniquely trained to provide flexible family therapy for children of all ages — and we often use activities and play-based strategies to engage every member of the family.

Families with college-aged and adult children

Family therapy is also helpful for families with older children. It helps family members recognize old patterns of relating and develop new methods for better communication. We want to help families recognize their strengths, have more productive conversations and build the tools to resolve and minimize conflict — so you can focus on enjoying your time together again.

“There are no individuals in the world, only fragments of families.” — Carl Whitaker
